Careers guidance

Our Career Development Advisers can help you at all stages of your career planning and decision-making. They can discuss with you possible ideas, potential occupations and other areas of interest. They can help you to determine your own priorities and point you in the direction of relevant information.

How can you access advice and guidance?

Students and graduates can access advice and guidance on any aspect of career planning by making an appointment to see a professionally qualified Career Development Adviser.

We also offer students who are seeking advice specifically about work experience, part-time and vacation work an appointment with our professionally qualified Work Experience Coordinator.

Individual appointments

Advice and guidance appointments are confidential and are conducted in private offices in Careers Development Services.

Appointments can be

  • Short 20 minute appointments which can be booked on the day only, and are designed to enable clients to see a Career Development Adviser at short notice, get answers to quick queries and advice to get clients started. It may lead to referral to a full guidance appointment.
  • Full 45 minute appointments which can be booked in advance and are designed to offer a comprehensive guidance service. Appointments will be guaranteed within 5 working days of a request.

Email advice

If you are unable to access our appointment system you can get advice through our Careers Advice Via Email service which can be found on our website. You will receive a reply to your query within 3 working days.

Telephone advice

If you are unable to access our appointment system and would prefer to discuss a query over the telephone, a telephone appointment can be booked.
Appointments will be guaranteed within 5 working days of a request.

Follow up appointments

You are entitled to book follow up appointments to obtain ongoing support for your career planning.

Keeping records of your guidance appointment

Students and graduates are encouraged to take their own notes at their guidance appointments. Any client notes left with career development advisers are kept confidentially and destroyed after 2 years in accordance with the University confidentiality policy.

A client database is maintained recording all guidance appointments and includes key points of the discussion.

Email queries are stored confidentially in specific email folders.

What codes of practice do we work to?

We conform to the shared values of guidance as identified in the AGCAS Code of Practice on Guidance, Appendix A.
