Getting help from a Career Development Adviser
Careers Guidance
Our Career Development Advisers can help you at all stages of your career planning and decision-making. They can discuss with you possible ideas, potential occupations and other areas of interest. They can help you to determine your own priorities and point you in the direction of relevant information. Above all, they can help you to focus realistically on how your skills, interests and motivations relate to the career ideas you want to pursue.
Careers guidance appointments are confidential and are conducted in a private setting in the Careers Service. They last for 45 minutes and we promise to provide you with an appointment within 10 working days of your request. A discussion with a Career Development Adviser can be about any aspect of your hopes or plans during or after your course in terms of work, further study or time out, such as:
- Getting started with making career plans.
- Exploring what aspects of your individual preferences, strengths, skills etc might help you to decide on a career.
- Finding out about the range of options open to you.
- Helping you to help yourself e.g. signposting relevant sources of information and encouraging you to research areas of interest.
- Giving advice on personal issues which could impact on your career planning
- Feedback on your draft CV or application form (remember to bring paper copies to your appointment). We also offer shorter appointments if you just wish to have feedback on your CV.
- Preparing for attending interviews or assessment centres, including having a mock interview (2 days notice needed for mock interviews).
- Supporting and encouraging you to feel confident about your next step.
You can book an appointment with a Career Development Adviser by calling into the Careers Service in Student Central, or by telephoning 01274 234991 (4991 internally).
Drop In Duty
We also operate a 'drop-in duty' system where you can see an adviser at short notice Monday to Friday, during term. Appointments last for about 20 minutes and are a great way of getting your CV checked quickly, or getting information and advice on a particular issue. They do not replace guidance appointments but can give you answers and reassurance on specific topics.
To use Quick Queries / Drop in Duty
- An Adviser is generally available between 11.00 and 15.00, Monday to Friday, and also between 16.00 and 18.00, Monday to Thursday.
- You must book to see the Adviser on the day, by either telephoning 01274 234991, or calling into the Careers Service in Student Central and writing your name against your preferred time-slot.
- Alternatively, you can call into the Careers Service and book the next available time-slot, and wait in our Information Room (we do have a computer cluster you can use whilst you are waiting, and lots of useful information for you to browse).
- If you are late for your time-slot, the Adviser may refuse to see you as there will be other people waiting.
- Appointments with the duty Adviser will last a maximum of 20 minutes but could be less depending on the nature of your enquiry.
- The Advisor might suggest that a longer appointment may be necessary but your 20 minutes will get you started.
- Please note that students cannot get support for academic course work through this system. Contact your module tutor directly if you require any help with an assignment. You can also get Study Skills help from the Learner Development Unit.
Careers Advice Via Email
If you can't get in to see us you can use our Careers Advice Via Email service. It doesn't replace careers guidance appointments, but it does give you a useful way of getting relevant information and advice. We promise to reply within 3 working days, but we often beat this target!.
