Your commitment as a Mentee
Mentoring provides you with the opportunity to meet with a professional who can support you during your career planning and this is a powerful way for you to develop your ideas. This is a fantastic opportunity to find out more about the reality of a career, from a professional who is doing the job!
What to expect
After successful completion of the application process, you will be selected and matched to a mentor who will offer experience, knowledge and / or skills that are appropriate to your chosen career.
How you benefit from the mentoring relationship is up to you. You may, for example, discuss your mentor’s job role, their responsibilities, background, career progression and how they got to where they are. Your mentor may introduce you to other contacts and support networking opportunities to help you to find out more about similar job roles.
Your mentor will assist you to gain a better understanding of the world of work, acting as a "role model" and supporting you in your personal development. Although it is not guaranteed, many past students have secured work experience and work shadowing through their mentor.
Your commitment
If you are selected to take part in the Career Mentoring Scheme there is a minimum commitment level which includes;
- Attendance at an Induction Training Session where you will set your objectives and priorities for what you would like to achieve from the mentoring partnership
- A minimum of four, one-hour meetings with your mentor during a period of four-six months. Many past mentors have voluntarily exceeded this minimum commitment, but it is up to you to negotiate convenient times of when and for how long you meet.
- Attendance at a “Reflection and Evaluation” event to recognise progress and achievement
- A short reflective report (roughly one side of A4) detailing your development, what you have gained from the programme and your next steps.
Throughout the process you will also have the full support of a Career Development Adviser should you need any further assistance.
