Our Career Development Advisers can help you at all stages of your career planning and decision-making. They can discuss with you possible ideas, potential occupations and other areas of interest. They can help you to determine your own priorities and point you in the direction of relevant information. Above all, they can help you to focus realistically on how your skills, interests and motivations relate to the career ideas you want to pursue.
Careers guidance appointments are confidential and are conducted in a private setting in the Careers Service. They last for 45 minutes and we promise to provide you with an appointment within 10 working days of your request. A discussion with a Career Development Adviser can be about any aspect of your hopes or plans during or after your course in terms of work, further study or time out, such as:
You can book an appointment with a Career Development Adviser by calling into the Careers Service in the Student Centre, by telephoning 01274 234991 (4991 internally) or by emailing careers@bradford.ac.uk.
We also operate a 'drop-in duty' system where you can see an adviser at short notice between 11am and 3pm Monday to Friday, during term. Appointments last for about 20 minutes and are a great way of getting your CV checked quickly, or getting information and advice on a particular issue. They do not replace guidance appointments but can give you answers and reassurance on specific topics.
If you can't get in to see us you can use our Careers Advice Via Email service. It doesn't replace careers guidance appointments, but it does give you a useful way of getting relevant information and advice. We promise to reply within 3 working days, but we often beat this target!.
Mentoring has become increasingly popular both in education and the workplace with projects across the UK offering support and encouragement to mentees in a variety of settings. It is well established that many successful people have benefited from the support of a mentor. Allegedly, Richard Branson was mentored by the late Freddie Laker (British airline entrepreneur and pioneer of ‘no frills’ air travel) and Oprah Winfrey was mentored by Maya Angelou (poet and writer).
Our Career Mentoring Scheme is a voluntary partnership where a mentor (employer) offers to share his/her expertise with a mentee (student) in order to provide practical support and encouragement. It is a non-judgemental partnership, based on mutual trust and confidentiality, which encourages both parties to benefit and learn from each others experiences.
Mentoring is a powerful tool for development where the mentor supports the mentee to manage their own learning by setting personal goals and working towards achieving positive change. The mentor often plays a crucial part in the development of the mentees employability skills by helping them to understand the workplace, thus giving them a competitive edge in the graduate labour market.
If you are interesting in participating in this scheme, our mentoring website has all the details.
